Using at-home dim light melatonin tests in kids with chronic pain: how doable and acceptable it is

A small pilot study suggests self-directed at-home collection is feasible in pediatric chronic pain patients.

Evidence

This 3-week feasibility study enrolled 6 pediatric chronic pain patients and 6 healthy controls and was able to calculate salivary dim-light melatonin onset in 8 of 12 participants, with average onset 1 hour 43 minutes earlier than self-reported sleep onset.

The study was very small and only obtained usable dim-light melatonin onset estimates in 8 participants, so feasibility and accuracy need confirmation in larger pediatric samples.
