Differences Between Men and Women in Airway Structure on Chest Scans from the COPDGene Study

Abstract

Women exhibited a 1.00 mm smaller segmental lumen diameter than men in never-smokers.

  • In never-smokers, men had thicker airway walls compared to women.
  • In ever-smokers, men also showed a greater segmental airway wall area percentage than women.
  • Women had narrower segmental lumen diameters than men in both never-smokers and ever-smokers.
  • Changes in airway metrics were associated with lower respiratory function, increased dyspnea, and poorer quality of life in women compared to men.
  • Smaller airway lumen sizes in women may contribute to higher respiratory morbidity and mortality.
