Sex changes how sleep patterns relate to depression symptoms in teenagers

Updated

Abstract

Among 3058 adolescents, social jetlag is positively associated with depressive symptoms particularly in females.

  • Social jetlag is defined as the difference in sleep timing between weekends and weekdays.
  • Females show a significant negative association between total sleep time on school nights and depressive symptoms.
  • In females, higher social jetlag correlates with increased depressive symptoms, while this is not observed in males.
  • Sex moderates the relationship between sleep duration, social jetlag, and depressive symptoms.
  • Adequate sleep duration and regular sleep timing may be crucial for emotional health in female adolescents.
