Short sleep and social jetlag are each linked to anxiety symptoms in teenagers

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 3,097 adolescents, both school night sleep duration and social jetlag are associated with anxiety symptoms.

  • Shorter total sleep time on school nights is linked to higher levels of anxiety symptoms.
  • Social jetlag, or differences in sleep timing between weekends and school nights, is also associated with increased anxiety.
  • Both sleep duration and social jetlag show small but significant associations with anxious symptoms.
  • Findings suggest that maintaining regular sleep patterns and adequate sleep duration may be important for adolescent emotional health.
