Factors linked to shift work sleep problems in Japanese nurses on fast-changing schedules

Updated

Abstract

The prevalence of shift work disorder (SWD) among shiftworking nurses is 24.4%.

  • Nurses with SWD reported lower health-related quality of life and more severe depressive symptoms compared to those without SWD.
  • Higher rates of actual accidents/errors and near misses were observed among nurses with SWD.
  • Working longer hours at night and frequently missing nap opportunities during night shifts are significantly associated with SWD.
  • Having an eveningness-oriented chronotype is also linked to the occurrence of SWD in shiftworking nurses.
