Patterns of sleep problems linked to thoughts of suicide in teenagers over time

Updated

Abstract

A sample of 19,095 Chinese adolescents identified four distinct trajectories of sleep disturbance symptoms over one year.

  • The trajectories included resistant (76.2%), delayed-dysfunction (8.8%), recovery (7.4%), and chronic-dysfunction (7.6%) groups.
  • Adolescents in the delayed-dysfunction group exhibited a 2.86 times higher risk of developing suicidal ideation compared to those in the resistant group.
  • The chronic-dysfunction group showed a 2.14 times higher risk of developing suicidal ideation than the resistant group.
  • These associations remained significant after accounting for socio-demographics, negative life events, depressive symptoms, and baseline suicidal ideation.
