Sleep problems linked to suicidal thoughts through unusual mental experiences in teenagers over time

Updated

Abstract

The prevalence of suicidal ideation decreased from 20.2% to 18.4% among adolescents over six months.

  • Adolescents reporting suicidal ideation also exhibited higher rates of sleep disturbance and shorter sleep duration.
  • Both sleep disturbance and short sleep duration at baseline were linked to an increased risk of suicidal ideation six months later.
  • Psychotic-like experiences were identified as a mediator in the relationship between sleep problems and suicidal ideation.
