Sleep, tiredness, and focus of commercial airline pilots during international flights

Updated

Abstract

Nineteen pilots participated in a study examining sleep, fatigue, and attention during international flights.

  • Pilots reported varying levels of sleep in the prior 24 hours before and after each flight.
  • A significant effect of the flight stage was found on sleep, self-rated fatigue, and mean response speed.
  • Self-rated fatigue was significantly impacted by the flight sector.
  • Prior sleep was identified as a significant predictor of fatigue and attention after international flights.
  • These results suggest that sleep should be integrated into flight and duty time regulations to reduce fatigue.
