Sleep-wake patterns linked to anxiety and depression in medical students at a Wuhu university in 2020

Abstract

Of 2231 medical students, 59.84% were identified as having an evening circadian chronotype.

  • Evening chronotype is associated with a higher likelihood of anxiety (adjusted odds ratio 1.403) and depression (adjusted odds ratio 1.639) compared to intermediate chronotype.
  • The detection rates of anxiety and depression among medical students were 12.86% and 14.12%, respectively.
  • A combined presence of anxiety and depression was found in 9.59% of students.
  • The majority of medical students displayed an evening chronotype, with only 2.24% identified as morning chronotype.
