Using smartphones to monitor daily rhythms in people with non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder who can see over 258 days

Abstract

A 258-day continuous assessment using smartphone-based digital phenotyping effectively inferred sleep-wake patterns.

  • Smartphone interaction data was used to assess sleep-wake patterns instead of traditional methods.
  • The Rhythm app logged human-smartphone interactions to score sleep or wake states over 5-minute intervals.
  • Results indicated strong agreement between smartphone-based tracking and conventional actigraphy over 109 days.
  • The circadian periods derived from smartphone data (25.16 h) and actigraphy (25.11 h) were nearly identical.
  • This approach may provide a practical alternative for long-term monitoring of circadian rhythms in Non-24-h Sleep-Wake Disorder.
