Temporary improvement in thinking and daily skills in advanced Alzheimer's after high-dose psilocybin mushroom use: a case report
Updated
Abstract
The administration of 5 g of psilocybin-containing mushrooms led to notable functional improvements in an 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer's disease.
- Following psilocybin administration, the patient exhibited spontaneous autobiographical speech approximately 19 hours later.
- Improvements included restoration of urinary continence and enhanced mobility, allowing for autonomous dressing.
- The patient showed increased emotional responsiveness and sustained social interaction over days and weeks.
- Contextual memory retrieval and preserved working memory for social context were also observed.
- These findings indicate that some functional capacity may remain accessible in advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease under specific conditions.
