Weight gain linked to night shift work in nurses

Updated

Abstract

Working at night is associated with a weight gain greater than that of day workers (β=0.24 kg/m² vs. β=0.15 kg/m²).

  • Weight gain is also associated with aging (β=0.16 kg/m²) and the duration of working in nursing (β=0.18 kg/m²).
  • Night workers tend to have a higher educational level and more years of experience in nursing compared to day workers.
  • Night workers report longer sleep duration and do not have diabetes more frequently than their day-working counterparts.
  • A higher number of smokers are found among night workers compared to those working during the day.
  • Longer tenure in nursing correlates with a greater likelihood of developing overweight or obesity.
