Abstract

Energy intake progressively shifts from morning to evening hours as children age.

  • Evening energy intake began to exceed morning energy intake starting at age 11/12 years.
  • From age 11/12 years, greater evening energy intake is associated with higher total daily energy intake.
  • The difference in total daily energy intake between the highest and lowest tertile of eveningness was 11% for adolescents aged 17/18 years.
  • 'Eveningness in energy intake' increased consistently from ages 3/4 years to 17/18 years.
  • All observed associations were statistically significant (p < 0.04).
