  • Aca proteins repress acr transcription following phage DNA injection.
  • High levels of acr transcription without Aca activity are lethal to phages.
  • Acr proteins accumulate early during infection to inhibit host CRISPR-Cas systems.
  • The conservation of aca genes suggests a protective role against the effects of acr promoters.
