Changes over time in diabetes medicine prescriptions for new type 2 diabetes patients in Spain

Updated

Abstract

Essence

New type 2 diabetes prescribing in Spain shifted toward more combination therapy in 2023-2024, especially metformin with SGLT2 inhibitors and/or GLP-1 agonists.

Evidence

This observational primary-care study compared antidiabetic prescription frequencies at diagnosis across Spain in 2018-2022 versus 2023-2024, overall and by sex and age.

Caveat

The study describes prescribing patterns at diagnosis only, so it does not show why clinicians chose these regimens or whether the changes improved patient outcomes.
