Body image and interest in GLP-1 drugs for weight loss

Updated

Abstract

Among 225 participants, those interested in GLP-1s for weight loss reported greater body shame and higher BMIs.

  • Interest in GLP-1s was associated with increased body surveillance and weight concerns.
  • Participants willing to tolerate GLP-1 side effects demonstrated higher levels of disordered eating behaviors.
  • Body appreciation moderated the relationship, indicating that a higher appreciation for one's body may reduce interest in using GLP-1s.
  • BMI and recent weight loss attempts accounted for unique variance in interest in GLP-1 use.
