Cancer Rates in People Using Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Medications

Updated

Abstract

Among 106,088 patients, 1.9% developed cancer, with GLP-1 receptor agonists linked to lower liver and pancreatic cancer risk.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists may reduce the risk of liver cancer compared to insulin.
  • A significant reduction in pancreatic cancer risk was also observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • No significant differences in the risk of other major cancers were found between GLP-1RA and insulin users.
  • The study included patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes from 2013 to 2021.
  • Further research is needed to assess the long-term safety of GLP-1 receptor agonists regarding cancer risk.
