Effects of carbohydrate and electrolyte intake during repeated intense running

Updated

Abstract

Muscle glycogen utilization was reduced by 22% with a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage compared to a noncarbohydrate placebo during exercise.

  • Ingesting a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution resulted in lower muscle glycogen utilization (192.5 vs 245.3 mmol glucosyl units per kg dry matter).
  • Type II muscle fibers demonstrated greater glycogen utilization than Type I fibers during the noncarbohydrate placebo trial.
  • Blood lactate levels were significantly higher after 30 minutes of exercise in the noncarbohydrate placebo condition.
  • Serum insulin concentration was lower in the noncarbohydrate placebo group during exercise.
