How Sleep Timing, Social Jetlag, and Sleep Quality Relate to Physical Symptoms in Medical Students

Updated

Abstract

Higher morningness is associated with lower social jetlag, better sleep quality, and fewer somatic symptoms in 500 medical students.

  • Morningness correlates with reduced social jetlag and improved sleep quality.
  • Social jetlag is linked to poorer sleep quality and increased somatic symptom scores.
  • Sleep quality has the strongest relationship with somatic symptoms among the assessed factors.
  • After adjusting for sleep quality, chronotype and social jetlag do not independently correlate with somatic symptoms.
  • Indirect pathways, primarily through sleep quality, explain the relationship between chronotype and somatic symptoms.
