Circadian Misalignment Raises Inflammation and Blood Pressure in Long-Term Shift Workers

Updated

Abstract

Circadian misalignment increased 24-h high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) by 11% (p < 0.0001).

  • Circadian misalignment is associated with increased 24-h systolic blood pressure by 1.4 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 0.8 mmHg (both p ≤ 0.038).
  • The increase in 24-h systolic blood pressure was mainly due to a rise of 1.7 mmHg during the wake period (p = 0.017).
  • The increase in 24-h diastolic blood pressure was primarily attributed to an increase of 1.8 mmHg during the sleep opportunity (p = 0.005).
  • These findings suggest that circadian misalignment independently contributes to increased inflammation and blood pressure in chronic shift workers.
