Effectiveness and safety of weekly semaglutide compared to daily insulin and similar drugs in adults with type 2 diabetes not controlled by oral medications

Updated

Abstract

Once-weekly semaglutide reduced HbA1c by an average of 0.64% compared to other injectable therapies in insulin-naïve adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Semaglutide led to a body weight reduction of 4.38 kg compared to other antidiabetic treatments.
  • Achieving HbA1c levels below 7.0% was more common with semaglutide, with a relative risk of 1.60.
  • The risk of hypoglycemia was lower with semaglutide compared to insulin glargine, with a relative risk of 0.53.
  • Systolic blood pressure was reduced by 2.32 mmHg with semaglutide.
  • Higher rates of gastrointestinal adverse events and treatment discontinuation were observed with semaglutide compared to insulin.
