How social media ads for weight loss drugs shape public views and health messages

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Social media ads for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs frame them as medically credible, accessible, affordable, and emotionally beneficial, which may shape public perceptions.

Evidence

A critical discourse and thematic analysis of 90 English-language Facebook and Instagram ads for FDA-approved GLP-1 weight-loss drugs from February 2023 to February 2024 identified four recurring themes: health and safety, consultation and support, ease and affordability, and emotional and psychological impact.

Caveat

This study analyzes ad language only, so it cannot show how consumers actually responded or whether benefits and risks were communicated accurately.

Essence

  • Social media ads for GLP-1 receptor agonist weight loss drugs leverage medical authority and emotional appeals to influence consumer perceptions. Key themes include health and safety, consultation and support, ease and affordability, and emotional impact.

Key takeaways

  • The most prominent theme in the ads was 'Health and Safety,' emphasizing medical credibility and efficacy. Ads frequently referenced FDA approval and clinical backing to build trust and reassure consumers about the safety of these weight loss solutions.
  • Another significant theme was 'Consultation and Support,' highlighting the availability of online consultations. This reflects a growing trend toward telehealth services, making professional advice more accessible to consumers.
  • The ads also focused on 'Emotional and Psychological Impact,' appealing to consumers' desires for self-improvement and transformation. By promising increased confidence and better self-esteem, these ads tap into deeper emotional motivations for weight loss.

Caveats
