How GLP-1 Receptor Agonists May Affect Hair: Helpful or Harmful?

Updated

Abstract

Some studies suggest hair regrowth in patients using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) for type II diabetes and obesity.

  • Evidence linking GLP-1RAs to hair-related conditions is inconsistent.
  • Certain studies report hair regrowth in patients with androgenetic alopecia.
  • Decreased inflammatory cells have been noted in patients with cicatricial alopecia using GLP-1RAs.
  • Conversely, many reports associate GLP-1RAs with telogen effluvium, a form of hair loss.
  • Careful clinical evaluation and monitoring of patients on GLP-1RAs is advised.
  • Further controlled studies are needed to clarify the impact of GLP-1RAs on hair biology.
