Effectiveness and safety of GLP-1 and SGLT2 drugs added to insulin in type 1 diabetes

Abstract

Ninety studies were included, showing that GLP-1 receptor agonists reduced glycated haemoglobin by 0.56%, while SGLT2 inhibitors lowered it by 0.38%.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists led to a decrease in total and basal daily insulin requirements and body weight by -3.6 kg.
  • SGLT2 inhibitors reduced insulin requirements by -4.7 U/day and body weight by -2.5 kg.
  • Severe hypoglycaemia was rare for both drug classes, but SGLT2 inhibitors were associated with an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) with a risk ratio of 2.19.
  • Gastrointestinal adverse effects were the most commonly reported side effects for GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Renal parameters remained stable or improved, and cardiovascular events were infrequent across both drug classes.
