How GLP-1 Medicines Affect Body Fat and Muscle in People with Overweight and Obesity

Updated

Abstract

Participants receiving GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment experienced a 0.78 kg greater reduction in lean mass compared to controls.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment was associated with a significant reduction in fat mass of 3.43 kg compared to controls.
  • Three trials with a total of 171 participants were included in the analysis.
  • The reduction in lean mass showed a moderate level of heterogeneity (I² = 63.2%).
  • The findings suggest a need for clinicians to combine GLP-1 RA therapy with lifestyle interventions.
