High levels of AlkB homolog 5 may slow non-small cell lung cancer by helping cell death through m6A removal on SLC7A11

Updated

Abstract

ALKBH5 expression is low in lung cancer patients.

  • Low levels of ALKBH5 are associated with poor outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • Upregulation of ALKBH5 in NSCLC cells is linked to reduced cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, while promoting apoptosis.
  • Increasing ALKBH5 levels leads to decreased glutathione and elevated lipid reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and iron ion contents.
  • ALKBH5 upregulation results in downregulation of SLC7A11 by reducing its m6A modification.
  • The effects of ALKBH5 on ferroptosis and malignant behaviors are partially counteracted by SLC7A11 upregulation.
  • In vivo studies indicate that increased ALKBH5 expression suppresses tumor development and lowers GPX4 levels.
