Injection of LPS temporarily lowers biological clock gene activity in rats

Updated

Abstract

LPS caused a transient suppression of biological clock genes in both the suprachiasmatic nucleus and liver within 24 hours.

  • Control rats exhibited robust circadian patterns in clock gene expression, with peak levels of rPer2 and rDBP at specific times.
  • On day 1, LPS significantly reduced the expression of rPer2 and rDBP in the suprachiasmatic nucleus.
  • LPS also led to significant suppression of rPer1, rPer2, rDBP, rPPARA, and rFKBP51 in the liver on day 1.
  • Recovery of gene expression was observed by day 2 after LPS administration.
  • The findings suggest a link between the biological clock and the body's response to inflammation.
