Using a mindfulness smartphone app to help mild and severe insomnia symptoms: A pilot study

Updated

Abstract

Participants using the mindfulness smartphone application experienced a greater reduction in sleep onset latency compared to those using the progressive muscle relaxation app.

  • The mindfulness group showed medium effect size improvements in sleep efficiency after the intervention.
  • Both groups experienced significant reductions in total wake time and insomnia severity over time.
  • Improvements were also noted in cognitive pre-sleep arousal and daytime mood for both groups.
  • These findings indicate that mindfulness and progressive muscle relaxation apps may help alleviate insomnia symptoms.
