Pupil Responses to Light Linked to Light-Sensitive Retinal Cells, Vision Focus, and Sleep

Updated

Abstract

Subjects spent an average of 104.8 ± 46.6 minutes outdoors per day over the previous week.

  • Morning melatonin concentration (6.9 ± 3.5 pg/ml) was significantly associated with time spent outdoors and light exposure.
  • Good sleep quality was indicated for emmetropes (PSQI score 4.2 ± 2.3) while myopes reported poorer sleep quality (5.6 ± 2.2, P = .04).
  • No significant associations were found between pupil metrics and light exposure or refractive error.
  • Findings suggest a complex relationship between light exposure, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, refractive error, and sleep.
