Long-term results of two types of weight loss surgery for obesity: gastric bypass versus sleeve gastrectomy

Updated

Abstract

After 10 years, the mean excess body mass index loss was 60.6% for sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and 65.2% for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).

  • Patients undergoing RYGB had a higher mean percentage excess body mass index loss compared to SG in the per-protocol population.
  • Conversion rates due to insufficient weight reduction or reflux were significantly higher in the SG group (29.9%) than in the RYGB group (5.5%).
  • There was no significant difference in total percentage weight loss between the two surgical procedures.
  • Patients who underwent SG experienced a higher incidence of de novo gastroesophageal reflux compared to those who had RYGB.
