Latent autoimmune diabetes in two young women treated with oral semaglutide and long-acting insulin

Updated

Abstract

Two cases of latent autoimmune diabetes in youth (LADY) demonstrate positive outcomes with treatment using semaglutide and basal insulin.

  • Case 1 involved a 20-year-old woman with obesity who experienced significant weight loss of -20 kg and resolution of liver steatosis after switching from metformin to oral semaglutide while maintaining detectable C-peptide levels.
  • Case 2 involved a 13-year-old girl who achieved optimal glycemic control and increased C-peptide levels after transitioning from multiple daily insulin injections to oral semaglutide.
  • Both cases exhibited high-titer positivity for multiple diabetes-related autoantibodies, indicating autoimmune diabetes.
  • The findings suggest that oral semaglutide may be an effective treatment option for managing LADY, with potential benefits for weight control and metabolic health.
