Measuring natural chemical compounds in Amanita muscaria, Psilocybe mushrooms, and related consumer products

Updated

Abstract

Psilocin and psilocybin levels in five Psilocybe species samples ranged from 0.001-1.6% and 9.9-19.3%, respectively.

  • Five characteristic compounds were assessed in mushroom-based products: ibotenic acid, muscimol, muscarine, psilocin, and psilocybin.
  • Method validation confirmed satisfactory accuracy and consistency for detecting the five compounds.
  • Of 14 gummies claiming to contain Amanita mushroom extracts, only muscimol and muscarine were found, with ibotenic acid absent.
  • One gummy product was found to contain psilocin and psilocybin, despite labeling that stated 'no psilocybin.'
  • Eleven products contained both psilocin and psilocybin, while five products did not have any of the target compounds.
