How Low Self-Control and Life Meaning Together Relate to Internet Gaming Problems and Daily Functioning in Chinese Teens

Updated

Abstract

A sample of 2064 adolescents reveals significant relationships between low self-control, meaning in life, and internet gaming disorder symptoms.

  • Males reported significantly greater internet gaming disorder (IGD) symptoms and lower levels of self-control compared to females.
  • IGD symptoms were positively linked to impulsivity, temper, and the search for meaning, while negatively associated with the presence of meaning in life.
  • The interaction between low presence of meaning in life and impulsivity intensified IGD symptoms in adolescents.
  • Temper also negatively affected family functioning more in adolescents with lower levels of meaning in life.
  • The findings highlight the importance of meaning in life as a potential moderating factor in the relationship between low self-control and IGD symptoms.
