In a study involving 24 healthy adults, isolated macronutrient boluses produced distinct endocrine responses.

  • Postprandial glucose levels were stable after consuming protein or fat but significantly increased after carbohydrate intake.
  • Glucagon levels increased after protein consumption compared to fat and carbohydrate, indicating a different metabolic response.
  • Insulin, C-peptide, and amylin levels rose significantly after carbohydrate intake, with smaller increases observed after protein and minimal changes after fat.
  • GLP-1 was higher following protein consumption compared to both fat and carbohydrate, suggesting different effects on gut hormones.
  • Ghrelin decreased after carbohydrate and protein intake, while leptin levels remained unchanged across all conditions.
