Changes in obesity and use of blood sugar–lowering drugs in people with type 1 diabetes in the US

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity among youth with type 1 diabetes increased from 18.1% in 2008-2011 to 26.0% in 2020-2023.

  • The prevalence of obesity among adults with type 1 diabetes rose from 30.5% in 2008-2011 to 38.1% in 2020-2023.
  • Obesity rates were highest among Black and Hispanic youth and adults, with persistent racial and ethnic disparities over time.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonist prescriptions increased significantly across all BMI categories for both youth and adults with type 1 diabetes.
  • The increase in GLP-1RA prescriptions occurred in a dose-response manner, indicating higher prescriptions with higher BMI.
