Laboratory study of how oroxylin A from Scutellaria baicalensis root relaxes uterine muscle

Updated

Abstract

Oroxylin A significantly inhibits the amplitude and frequency of uterine contractions, with IC50 values ranging from 12.34 to 76.43 microM.

  • Oroxylin A is isolated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, a known tocolytic herb.
  • Uterine contractions were induced using various agents, including acetylcholine and oxytocin.
  • The inhibitory effects of oroxylin A were observed against contractions induced by several excitatory factors.
  • Oroxylin A's effects were not influenced by a calcium-free environment or specific inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase, beta-receptors, or cyclooxygenase.
  • The relaxation mediated by oroxylin A may involve the opening of calcium-dependent potassium channels or activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels.
  • These findings suggest that oroxylin A could serve as a potential lead compound for developing new tocolytic drugs.
