Shift work, changing work shifts, and risk of dying from heart disease at work

Updated

Abstract

Among 21,000 men in heavy equipment plants, 72% were on the first shift at the time of ischemic heart disease-related deaths.

  • 163 men who died from ischemic heart disease at work were compared to 781 controls of the same age.
  • The average duration on a current shift without change was 9 years.
  • No significant difference in heart disease risk was observed based on current shift.
  • Recent transitions from afternoon or night shifts to day shift may initially reduce heart disease risk, but this effect diminishes over time.
  • Changing from first to second or third shift showed no negative impact on heart disease risk.
