How Social Factors Relate to Different Aspects of Sleep Health in Early Teens

Updated

Abstract

Among 10,082 adolescents, the average sleep duration was 8.9 hours.

  • Older age is linked to shorter sleep duration, later sleep timing, and increased social jet lag.
  • Gay/bisexual adolescents experience shorter sleep duration, later sleep timing, and more social jet lag.
  • Black, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American adolescents tend to have poorer sleep outcomes.
  • Lower household income correlates with shorter sleep duration and increased social jet lag.
  • The negative impact of Black race on sleep outcomes is more pronounced in higher-income or higher-education households.
