Better survival with diabetes drugs in heart failure patients with preserved heart pumping and fatty liver linked to metabolism

Abstract

Among patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) was linked to an increased risk of nonfatal cardiovascular events.

  • In HF patients, MASLD is associated with a higher risk of developing heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
  • The use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) in patients with HFpEF and MASLD is associated with reduced all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists are linked to a significant survival benefit in obese patients with HFpEF and MASLD without diabetes.
  • Results suggest that pharmacologic interventions targeting metabolic pathways may offer cardioprotective effects in certain patient subgroups.
