Changes in thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts, and sleep problems among Chinese high school students from 2014 to 2023

Abstract

A total of 110,193 high school students were included in the analysis of mental health trends in China.

  • From 2014 to 2018, suicidal ideation rose from 16.3% to 18.0%, and suicide attempts increased from 2.8% to 3.7%.
  • The prevalence of sleep disturbances also grew from 28.0% to 29.1% during the same period.
  • Peaks in 2021 showed suicidal ideation at 18.5%, suicide attempts at 4.2%, and sleep disturbances at 31.5%.
  • By 2023, these figures decreased to 17.4% for suicidal ideation, 3.4% for suicide attempts, and 27.7% for sleep disturbances.
  • Higher prevalence rates of suicidal behaviors were consistently observed among students aged 11-14 years and girls.
