Sleep problems link internet gaming disorder to suicidal thoughts and actions in over 135,000 Chinese middle school students

Updated

Abstract

The prevalence rates of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) among adolescents were found to be 1.6%, with 16.7% exhibiting suicidal behaviors.

  • Adolescents with IGD showed a significantly higher risk for suicidality, with nearly 60% reporting suicidal behaviors.
  • Among those with IGD, 50% reported experiencing suicidal ideation and 40% reported suicide attempts.
  • Both IGD and gaming usage were independently linked to suicidal behaviors.
  • Sleep disturbance was identified as a partial mediator in the relationship between IGD and suicidal behaviors, accounting for 47.0% of the total effect.
  • Regular assessments for suicidality and sleep disturbance are recommended for adolescents with IGD.
