Taurocholic Acid Linked to Disrupted Memory System Connections in People with Depression

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Higher taurocholic acid was linked to MDD and hippocampal connectivity, with mouse experiments suggesting a microbiome-bile-acid route to depression-like behavior.

Evidence

This mixed human observational and mouse mechanistic study profiled serum bile acids in 235 patients with depression and 232 controls, then tested fecal transfer, TCA supplementation, and S1PR2 antagonism in mice.

Caveat

The human evidence is associative, while the causal tests are in mice, so TCA remains a candidate marker or target rather than a proven clinical driver.
