Abstract
Seventeen studies were included in the review, comprising 12 preclinical and 5 clinical investigations.
- GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with changes in gut microbiota, including an increase in beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroidetes, Akkermansia muciniphila, and Lactobacillus.
- Improvements in intestinal villi and occludin expression were observed alongside reductions in colonic inflammation.
- A higher abundance of bacterial species linked to intestinal balance (eubiosis) was noted, which may relate to reduced inflammation and insulin resistance.
- Conversely, a lower abundance of potentially harmful bacteria associated with dysbiosis, like Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, was identified.
- GLP-1 receptor agonists appear to influence gut microbiota in a way that could improve metabolic parameters and exhibit anti-inflammatory effects.
- Further clinical studies are required to validate these findings.
