Comparing GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and SGLT2 Inhibitors in Heart Attack Patients Treated with Artery-Opening Procedures

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are associated with a lower 1-year risk of acute heart failure compared to SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

  • GLP-1 RAs showed a 1-year risk reduction for acute heart failure (HR 0.415) compared to SGLT2is.
  • Patients on GLP-1 RAs had lower all-cause hospitalization rates (HR 0.559) at 1 year.
  • The risk of recurrent myocardial infarction (HR 0.799) and stroke (HR 0.800) was also lower with GLP-1 RAs.
  • Atrial fibrillation risk was reduced with GLP-1 RAs (HR 0.804) compared to SGLT2is.
  • Major adverse cardiovascular events (HR 0.788) and acute kidney injury (HR 0.534) were less frequent in the GLP-1 RA group.
  • No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed at 30 or 90 days, but lower mortality was noted at 1 year (HR 0.700).
