Effects of GLP-1 receptor drugs on adult skeletal muscle and what this means for older adults

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy may lead to skeletal muscle mass loss accounting for up to 24.5% of total weight loss.

  • Most studies report that GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with a loss of skeletal muscle mass.
  • Improvements in muscle quality have been observed, with higher muscle density and lower fat content.
  • Generally, no significant changes in muscle strength were found across studies.
  • Only four of the 21 studies specifically focused on older adults, highlighting the need for more targeted research.
  • Current evidence is insufficient to assess age-related vulnerability to muscle loss during GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
