Breast Cancer Outcomes Compared Between Diabetes Drugs and Weight-Loss Surgery

Updated

Abstract

In a study of over 22,000 postmenopausal obese women with breast cancer, GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy was associated with a 57% lower instantaneous mortality risk compared to bariatric surgery alone.

  • 10-year overall survival rates were similar between GLP-1RA users (87%) and bariatric surgery patients (83%), but GLP-1RA users had a significantly reduced risk of death.
  • Locoregional recurrence rates were lower in the GLP-1RA group (1.8%) compared to the bariatric surgery group (4.7%).
  • In patients receiving both bariatric surgery and GLP-1RA therapy, overall survival was higher (91%) compared to those who underwent surgery alone (80%).
  • The combination of bariatric surgery and GLP-1RA therapy was associated with a lower locoregional recurrence rate (2.5%) compared to surgery alone (5.8%).
  • The observed benefits of GLP-1RA therapy may involve mechanisms beyond weight loss, including potential anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects.
