Starting GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment After Weight-Loss Surgery and Its Link to Major Heart Problems

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1RA treatment after bariatric metabolic surgery was associated with a 7.0% reduction in BMI and a 13.0% reduction in HbA1c.

  • Higher diabetes remission rates were observed in the GLP-1RA group (78.0%) compared to the BMS-only group (61.6%).
  • Predicted cardiovascular risk was similar before treatment but significantly lower among GLP-1RA users during follow-up (0.039% vs 0.046%).
  • The incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality was 12.7 and 10.6 per 1,000 person months in the BMS-only and GLP-1RA groups, respectively.
  • No overall statistically significant association was found between GLP-1RA initiation after BMS and MACE/all-cause mortality.
  • A lower risk of MACE/all-cause mortality was noted with increased time since BMS, suggesting a time-dependent benefit.
