Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are associated with 13-20% reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

  • GLP-1RAs are recognized as agents that protect multiple organs, extending benefits beyond just lowering blood sugar.
  • Major clinical trials indicate these drugs may reduce risks of cardiovascular events and slow CKD progression in both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals.
  • Exploratory analyses suggest that a significant part of the cardiovascular benefits from GLP-1RAs may occur through mechanisms not linked to changes in traditional cardiometabolic risk factors.
  • The review proposes a framework for understanding how GLP-1RAs could serve as early, disease-modifying treatments across the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic continuum.
  • Current barriers to the widespread use of GLP-1RAs include cost, access, and lack of awareness, rather than biological limitations.
