Use of GLP-1 Receptor Drugs and Their Link to Inflammation in U.S. Adults

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) users had significantly higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in unadjusted models.

  • In unadjusted models, GLP-1RA users showed elevated levels of systemic inflammation, indicated by CRP (β=1.081, p<0.01).
  • After adjusting for various demographic and clinical factors, the association between GLP-1RA use and CRP levels was no longer statistically significant (β=0.323, p=0.38).
  • Most of the variance in CRP levels was accounted for by clinical factors, suggesting confounding by indication.
  • The findings indicate that the observed higher CRP levels in GLP-1RA users may relate to a greater burden of cardiometabolic disease rather than a direct inflammatory effect of the medications.
  • Further longitudinal studies with larger samples and newer GLP-1 agents are necessary to determine any direct anti-inflammatory effects.
