Abstract

Oral glucose ingestion increased blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery by ∼70%.

  • Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) infusion stimulated blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery by ∼10% in the fasting state.
  • Concurrent infusion of a GIP receptor antagonist during oral glucose ingestion resulted in blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery being ∼22% lower.
  • GIP infusion did not affect blood flow in the hepatic artery or the celiac artery.
  • Insulin secretion decreased and levels of a bone resorption biomarker increased during GIP receptor antagonist infusion compared to saline infusion.
  • Glucagon levels remained unchanged regardless of GIP or GIP receptor antagonist infusions.
